EU Single Permit Directive 2026: The 90-Day Residence Limit

The European Union has moved to a new standard for processing applications from non-EU citizens. According to Directive 2024/1233, the procedure for obtaining a combined residence and work permit (Single Permit) must now not exceed 90 days.

What this means for you:

  1. Faster Decisions: In countries where the process previously took 6-12 months (like Poland or Lithuania), timelines are now strictly regulated.
  2. Employer Portability: It is now easier to change employers within the country without losing your status if your contract was terminated through no fault of your own.
  3. Internal Applications: Applications can now be submitted from within the Member State if the applicant holds a valid residence permit, not just from abroad.

The directive aims to reduce exploitation and ensure that non-EU workers have the same rights as EU nationals regarding working conditions and social security.
