Statistical Overview of Third-Country Labour in Latvia

The Republic of Latvia is facing some serious wahala with their population numbers in Northern Europe. The population keep dropping, birth rates are low, and many young Latvians are moving to Nordic and Western European countries to work. This has left big gaps in the workforce across many industries.

Foreign workers in Latvia are mostly found in four main areas:

1. International Transport and Freight Logistics (54%): Road transport companies operating out of Riga, Ventspils, and Liepāja hire international truck drivers (Class C+E) to drive across Scandinavia and Western Europe.
2. Timber, Woodworking, and Forestry (18%): Latvia has a massive timber industry that needs foreign sawyers, machine operators, and furniture assemblers in production hubs like Jelgava and Valmiera.
3. Food Production, Processing, and Packaging (16%): Bakeries, dairy plants, and fish canning factories all over Latvia.
4. Construction and Civil Engineering (12%): Building projects and infrastructure works around the Greater Riga area.

Wage Reality and Remuneration Structure

• International Truck Drivers: Just like in Lithuania, international drivers get a basic salary plus daily allowances (komandējuma nauda). Total take-home pay is usually between €1,700 and €2,400 net per month depending on the route.
• Factory and Timber Workers: The minimum gross wage in Latvia is around €700 to €740 per month. Basic factory pay is between €900 and €1,300 gross (€680 to €950 net), and many employers provide or help pay for housing.

Consular and Administrative Processing

• PMLP Sponsorship Approval: Employers have to first list the job with the State Employment Agency (NVA). If no local person takes it, PMLP will approve the employer's official sponsorship letter (izsaukums).
• Consular Verification: Since Latvia doesn't have many embassies in South Asia, interviews and biometrics are handled through the Embassy of Latvia in New Delhi (for India/Nepal/Bangladesh) or other partner Schengen visa facilities.
